Students in my Conservation Biology class took part in a service learning project in which they developed hands-on activities that promoted solutions to climate change. In partnership with NB Science Cafe Kids and Buttonwood Park Zoo, the event drew in more than 200 people! We even got some coverage by the local cable access! I'm so proud of these students and all of the hard work they put in to making this event a success! Alana received a research award from the office of undergraduate research! Her project continues to examine the disease progression of an apicomplexan in Atlantic Sea Scallops. She will also be working to optimize a diagnostic PCR procedure to identify the parasite from scallop tissues. Congrats!!!
Welcome REU students!!! We are excited to welcome Gretchen Johnson to the Koop lab for the summer. In between exploring the South Coast and eating as much seafood as possible, Gretchen will be studying gray meat disease in juvenile Atlantic Sea Scallops. Fingers crossed as she will attempt her first legit PCR today! :)
Please check out updates and new events on NB Science Cafe's new website (designed and maintained by yours truly).
http://www.nbsciencecafe.com Congrats to Lisa Bontemps, who received a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research to help complete her work investigating the effects of temperature on snail longevity when they are infected by trematodes!
I'm happy to report that we had a great crowd present to hear Dr. Grant O'Rielly speak about Higgs-Boson and other wonders of physics at last night's New Bedford Science Cafe.
Can't wait for October 11 (PLEASE NOTE THAT IS A WEDNESDAY), when we will welcome Dr. Tayhas Palmer from Brown University to talk about her work capturing CO2 and covering it to green plastics, biofuels, and other sustainable products. More to come.. Congratulations to Harrison Tobi, who has joined the lab as a new Master's student and was recently awarded a graduate research award from SARE (Sustainable Research and Agriculture Education). He will be working on a project titled "Parasite mitigation strategies in bay scallop aquaculture." Way to go!!
